Your Baby’s First Dentist Visit
As a parent, it’s never too early to start thinking about your child’s beautiful smile, regardless of whether they have a complete set of teeth or only a few sticking out. Scheduling dental appointments for your baby early on will help keep their teeth and gums in excellent condition. Want to learn more about preparing your baby for the dentist? When should the first appointment take place?
The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) recommends that dentists assess an infant’s mouth within six months after the first tooth appears or by the time they turn one year old – whichever comes first. Dentists also recommend that children receive a dental exam every six months to catch minor problems before becoming problematic.
Don’t baby teeth fall out?
Primary teeth, or baby teeth, generally start to fall out around the age of six. These teeth can stay in a child’s mouth until age 12. That said, it is still essential for your child to properly care for their teeth. For example, broken or infected teeth can negatively influence your child’s health and cause further pain in the future. Baby teeth that fall out too early can also cause adjacent teeth to shift and block the permanent tooth from coming out correctly. Your dentist will have the best recommendations for how to keep your child’s smile as healthy as possible!
What’s it like on the first visit?
Your baby’s first dentist appointment will generally be quick. The initial visit will usually include counting the little one’s teeth and examining different areas of the mouth, including the gums, lips, tongue, and insides of the cheeks. Furthermore, the dentist will discuss your family’s dental history and oral hygiene. You will get the chance to ask your dentist any questions as well!
